Where is the protagonist of the novel, he is known by the villagers as 'Railway Raju' as he is a popular tourist guide in the whole Malgudi. And this novel depicts the transformation of Raju from a tourist guide to a holy man or a spiritual guide. The novel starts from village, where a villager named was talking to Raju And telling him that his sister refuses to marry the Groom which was selected for him, as he took Raju as a holy wise man, but Raju was not paying attention to him instead he was happy that somebody is talking to him and he thinks about his past life of jail, and refreshes his memories of a tourist guide. Raju lived in a small village named Malgudi with his mother and he was quite popular as a Tourist guide with his name 'Railway Raju'. And then he recalls his Shop at railway station, which earlier belongs to his father. Next morning Velan brings his step sister to Raju and he tells her that 'What must happen must happen; no power on earth or in heaven can change its course, just has no one can change the course of that river'.

After her meeting with Raju she agreed to her family's wishes and it begins Raju's Journey as a holy man. Thus, villagers were gathered to see the Holy man. But Raju was not feeling good because he was thinking himself a traitor. But later he realizes that he had no alternative. He has to live rest of his life as a holy man.

But Raju is a saint now and he has hundreds of followers, people were worshipping him and giving him gifts. That is why he was happy where no one was respecting him in Malgudi, even his own mother leaves him and stays at his brother’s home. Later Velan’s brother told Raju that people were fighting due to famine. Raju has given the message that he will not eat till they are good. But Velan’s brother of the lesser intelligences ran and said that it doesn’t rain and there should be no fight. Then all the villagers thought that he is fasting for rain. Finally, Raju tells his life story to Velan.

Velan listened to him very carefully. And then he tells his Past life of school, how he built up the business after his father's death, and how his Fame as a Railway Raju increased day by day, and how his life got changed when he meet.

One day a couple named and Rosie arrived at Malgudi Railway Station. He took them to hotel and from there, after dropping Marco to Carve he took Rosie to watch a Cobra dance as she demanded, there Rosie amazed everyone with his dance by giving a snake girl performance. But Marco hates dance, and he didn't like Rosie’s dance. But Raju always praises her dance and spoke out his love for her.
