The new Hydra-matic 6T70/75 (6 Speed) is a fully automatic, six speed, front wheel drive, electronically controlled transmission that features clutch to clutch shifting. It is also all-wheel drive capable. It was first introduced in the 2007 model year in several different models. It consists primarily of a four element torque converter, three planetary gear sets, five clutch packs, one mechanical one-way clutch and a hydraulic pressurization and control system.

Three planetary gear sets provide the six forward gear ratios and reverse. Changing gear ratios is fully automatic and is accomplished through the use of a Transmission Control Module (TCM), that is located within the transmission. The AF23/33-5 is a fully-automatic, five speed, electrically controlled, front-wheel drive transmission. This transmission is currently used by many different vehicle manufacturers, among them are; GM, Infiniti, Nissan, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, and Volvo. In the GM, Saturn and Suzuki vehicles, the transmission is known as the AF23/33-5. In Saab vehicles it’s designated FA 57.

This transmission contains three planetary gear sets, three driving friction elements, five holding friction elements (one of which is a servo applied band), two sprags, and a torque converter, which contains a clutch assembly for increased fuel efficiency. The TCM will also control converter clutch operation. The 8L90 has undergone some parts changes from it’s inception until the present. Some of those changes are indicated in this manual and some are not.
