Naxos recordings regularly gain top ratings from respected music publications and websites. The 2009 Penguin Guide gives star ratings to more than 600 fine. The Gramophone Choice is Jansons's RCO account, but the same entry in the book edition of the Gramophone Classical Music Guide (2012) only has one star. The next two 'Additional Recommendations', Wand-BPO and Bohm-VPO, both received three-star score in the Gramophone Classical Music Guide (2012).

I've recently gotten into classical music and am just about get a copy of the Penguin Guide to Classical Music. However, I am planning to get a somewhat older edition since it will hopefully cover more of the out-of-print releases still readily available in second hand stores. At the moment, my choice stands between the following editions: 2002 2003/4 2005/6 As far as I understand, the 2003/4 edition, introduced 'Key recordings' and exceptional '****' performances (instead of the old */**/*** grading), as well as DVD-A reviews (these would be of little use to me since I don't own a player). However, having read the reviews over at Amazon, I am confused if the 2003/4 and 2005/6 editions are actually better than the 2002 version. For example, does 'Key recordings'/'****' provide any significant improvement from a buyer's guide point of view? Many people also talk about editing errors, omissions from previous volumes etc. Is there any fellow Hoffmanite that could give any further insight to which version that would suite me best?

Penguin Guide For Classical Music 2015 This Is The Play

My main priority is that it covers as many composers and great recordings as possible. A word of caution is in order: the Penguin Guides are entertaining reading and give you a point of view on recordings to consider, but please bear in mind that they, like any critical guides, reflect opinion--nothing more, nothing less. They do have their own perspectives, sometimes idiosyncratic; in particular, they sometimes have given me the impression that their critics live in constant terror that someone, somewhere, might play something *too fast*. Case in point: they dismissed the bracing Musica Antiqua Koln account of Bach's Sixth Brandenburg Concerto as mere 'strumming.' And for all you LP junkies, remember how the Penguin People used to advocate for pre-recorded cassette as a superior format?

In short, by all means look to Penguin guides for a starting point, but don't treat them with more reverence than they deserve, and keep your ears open and form your own opinions as you go along.
