King is originally from Detroit, Michigan, but spent the majority of his life in Mesa, Arizona. Upon graduating high school he joined the United States Army and served as a Military Policeman and Military Police Investigator for 6.5 years in the United States, Europe, and Central America eventually being stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Chief King began his career with the Alexandria Police Department in 1996. He has worked in almost every division in the department including Patrol, Community Policing, Traffic/DWI Task Force, Street Crimes, and Training Academy, and he was a founding member of the department's SWAT team. Chief King also served as operations commander for the department's Mobile Field Force and as commander of the department's honor guard. Chief King also served on a select committee of police academy staff members from across the state that recently rewrote the entire basic police officer training manual, which is used to train every law enforcement officer in the State of Louisiana.

During his career, Chief King has received multiple awards and commendations including the Department's Medal of Valor, and he is a two time recipient of the State of Louisiana’s individual officer award for DWI Enforcement. In addition to thousands of hours of training in a variety of law enforcement related areas, Chief King has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University, and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice with an emphasis on Police Administration/Crime Prevention from the University of Cincinnati.
