You don't need to read the manual at all in order to pass the CFE exams. Just work through the questions in the software and you'll be fine. You don't need much time to prepare and I do think it's a good idea to use the CFE study time to distract yourself in order to reduce the tension from waiting for the CPA results. The materials can be interesting even if you aren't working directly in a fraud detection/deterrence area. Obviously the CFE can't be compared to CPA in terms of time, effort or prestige but that doesn't mean it's a bad credential.

At worst you can consider the CFE as a proof that you are conceptually more exposed to fraud knowledge than the average person which is hardly a bad thing. I have seen respectable job openings with the CFE mentioned (mostly next to the CPA).
