• 15 Answers SOURCE: That's easy man! You will always hear, 'You sir, need to gap this or that at EXACTLY.00071542 inches per square meter'. The actual 'poor boy fix'- Put your magneto back on there, and stick a business card from your wallet in between it and the rotor. Let the magneto pull itself to it, you center it, and give it just a hair of breathing room (to slide the card back out). Tighten 'er down, and you got it. 1.- If you can't pull the card out, it is too tight.

Whether you are putting your equipment away for the season or needing to replace a part, locate your equipment or engine manual to get the information specific to your product.

2.- If you pull the card out easily, too loose. 3.- JUST enough to pull it out, and have it drag just a bit on the way out is JUST ENOUGH! Remember, on 4-strokes, they ARE forgiving, and can do miracles even if you try your best to destroy them. Posted on May 30, 2009.

Take it apart remembering where the parts go. There are some diaphragms or gaskets and screens on some, tiny jets and such that are inside the little 'bulb' or bowl, that can usually be taken off with a 10mm wrench. They also have little fiber gaskets and a bowl gasket or o-ring that must be in great condition with no trash. Clean off with starter fluid or carburetor cleaner. Posted on Jun 18, 2009.

Whites xlt metal detector parts I installed new diaphragm, cleaned carb again and flushed out tank. Still same problem. Thank you.My Yard-Man has a 158cc Series 550 Briggs I was plagued by this problem for about a month and after taking off the carb more than once and cleaning and blowing out all the ports and passages without good results I concluded that this carb was defective and bought an new OEM carb. SAME PROBLEM! I needed to determine if it were a lean or rich problem as I was certain of having spark and compression. Started it and waited until it started to stumble, just before it stalled I gave the little priming bulb a squirt.

It immediately caught again but only for a second and then started its stumblingly way back toward a stall which I could catch again with another squirt. OK, BRAND NEW CARB AND IT RUNS LEAN! In frustration I gave it a really hard squirt that depressed the bulb all the way in. It came back, but now was sounding that rich, farty, rough running way, like when you choke a motor too much. But it almost immediately came back to normal run. AND it kept running!
