Airport Handling Manual 1. GENERAL The development and adoption of standards for airport handling arose in Europe where an overlap of the networks of many different airlines resulted in the necessity for airlines to arrange handling contracts with each other. These standards reflected the handling carriers' need to treat all its customers equally and satisfied each airlines' requirement for common standards at each airport they served.

These standards, developed under the auspices of IATA over a period of thirty years, represent the most practical basic airport handling procedures. These procedures have been established as the most suitable for handling passengers and their baggage, cargo and mail, and are those most acceptable to the airlines' airport handling staff. Inevitably, however there is a continuing need for the development of new standards and procedures — airport systems and aircraft evolve, the regulatory environment changes and advances in technology, particularly automation, all affect airport ground handling. Therefore, the Airport Services Committee (ASC) must ensure that it meets the changing needs of the industry. Members wishing to contribute the work of these disciplines are most welcome to do so.
